Silver Horizons New Mexico is committed to helping the community’s lowest-income seniors.
Silver Horizons’ Mission:
To provide extra help for older adults with limited income in the Greater Albuquerque metro area.
Silver Horizons’ Vision:
To create a community in which older adults live in safety and comfort.
Silver Horizons is an independent registered 501c3 nonprofit organization located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For more than 35 years, Silver Horizons has helped the community’s lowest-income seniors meet their basic needs, have access to nutrition, and remain in their own safe and secure home.
Silver Horizons supports low-income and at-risk seniors by providing programs and resources that help them safely stay in their homes through accessibility and maintenance upgrades; paying utility bills to keep the power, heat and water on; and providing food pantry items, including home deliveries, to seniors who simply do not have enough food to eat.
Can you imagine living on less than $25 a day? About 85 percent of Silver Horizons’ clients are living on less than $750 a month. New Mexico is the second highest ranked state in the nation for senior hunger. And, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, one out of every seven Bernalillo Country seniors lives below the poverty level. Too many of New Mexico’s seniors are living in poverty, and the numbers of seniors in need continues to rise as Baby Boomers age.
Silver Horizons is the reliable community resource for seniors, as well as their families and caregivers, who are looking for help with home repairs and safety modifications, utility assistance to help pay mounting power and water bills, and nutritious food distribution, along with basic toiletry items, to help keep our loved ones healthy and fed.
In one year, Silver Horizons…
- helps more than 10,720 seniors, of whom have a less than $17,500 annual income.
- makes more than 300 home repairs working alongside the Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs.
- makes more than 650 home safety modifications, including access ramps and grab-bars to help seniors safely stay in their homes.
- assists more than 370 households with power, gas, propane and water bills with an average payment of $100 per household.
- provides assistance to more than 1,000 seniors quarterly at Senior Assistance Fairs held in collaboration with PNM’s Good Neighbor Fund.
- distributes more than 192,000 pounds of food to 950 households.
- receives more than 8,400 food pantry visits.
As an advocate for our community’s aging adults, Silver Horizons provides services to seniors in the greater Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Belen and Los Lunas area. In addition to providing much needed services and resources to low-income and at-risk seniors in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties, Silver Horizons has built trusted relationships with numerous support agencies and businesses in New Mexico and can help navigate you to the appropriate resources to meet your needs.
Established in 1979 as The Senior Health Foundation, our organization is rooted in its mission to improve and maintain a superior quality of life for the aging and elderly citizens of New Mexico. Receiving our 501c3 registered nonprofit status in 1980 and adapting our current name, Silver Horizons, in 1988, we have spent more than three decades building reliable and trustworthy assistance and support programs. Silver Horizons has worked to fill the gaps that government funding does not fill.
