FREE GROCERIES FOR LOW-INCOME SENIORS AND VETERANS
Thank you to Bernalillo County - Parks and Recreation/Senior Services and Optum New Mexico. We are very grateful for their support of our hunger relief efforts. Silver Horizons, with Optum New Mexico’s and Bern Co’s support, provides free groceries to thousands of low-income seniors and veterans each month, and helps hundreds of grandchildren many of these seniors are raising. Silver Horizons serves low-income seniors (ages 50+) and low-income veterans (all ages) in Central New Mexico. Optum New Mexico and Bern Co’s Senior and Social Services are working toward a healthier New Mexico! Learn more about Optum New Mexico by visiting nm.optum.com.
Our free groceries program stretches household budgets to help ensure there’s enough fresh produce and quality food in struggling households. Most of the low-income senior citizens and veterans we assist live on less than $900 a month! All of the people we assist live at, or below, the federal poverty level.
Too many low-income New Mexico seniors and veterans struggle to have enough food to eat. In fact, more New Mexico seniors live in poverty than in any other state in the nation. Nearly 40% of the seniors assisted by Silver Horizons are raising their grandchildren. Unfortunately, New Mexico is one of the worst states in the nation for childhood hunger. Basically, we are seeing two generations struggling together.
Our free groceries program helps keep a variety of foods available to low-income households who must make the choice between buying groceries, paying their utility bills, paying for necessary medications, or covering other life expenses. At Silver Horizons, we believe our aging and elderly citizens, veterans, and grandchildren should not have to make these difficult choices. If you, or a low-income senior or veteran you know, is in need of food, please call us at 505-884-3881.
